i've never really cared for diamonds myself. not that i've ever had one but considering that i do the exact opposite of what everyone else does, i'd prefer an emerald or ruby or something different.
i once read something about debeers creating the "two months salary" campaign in the 50s, when diamond engagement rings were not the norm. 60 years on, the "two months salary" marketing campaign had benchmarked everything we know about how to get engaged, married and celebrate "doing it all over again." essentially, this marketing approach has permeated our collective consciousness in regards to the price of love and commitment. it's also now entered pop culture, thanks to lee gainer, a D.C. artist who also happens to have a nice Etsy shop too.
lee took the two months salary idea and organized what different jobs in the real world would be able to afford according the two month's salary rule. you can see, compare and contrast what types of diamond rings are available to the construction worker, anesthesiologist, mathmetician, a-list actor or a security guard's salary.
i think her approach is hilarious and inventive. what do you think?
