Damn you, animal rights do-gooders with your hidden slaughterhouse cameras! You are going to make a vegan out of me yet. I had an inkling that just because chickens are free range doesn't mean that life is all sunshine & roses for our feathered friends. And this little documentary confirms it.
I never knew that male chicks are summarily killed by being thrown alive into meat grinders. Come to find out, male chickens can't lay eggs. And they also apparently don't grow quickly enough or get big enough to be raised profitably for meat. The hatchery where this video was shot kills over 150,000 male chicks a day. By throwing them into meat grinders. Alive. When they're fresh out of the shell. What a beautiful life, right?
So even at the cushiest free-range farm, it's only lady chicks, meaning that even if you buy the expensive eggs that make you feel better about yourself, you're still supporting an industry that places zero value on the life of these animals. So if you eat eggs (which I do), you have just as much chicken blood on your hands as if you're eating the bird itself. The money you spend on a dozen eggs or a delicious omelette directly supports the perpetration of extreme cruelty to animals.
But maybe there's some nice family farmers out there who don't throw male chicks into grinders and don't cut the beaks off the surviving chickens? Maybe they sell their magical eggs at Farmer's Markets in Chicago? I will look into that (because I love me some eggs, and I will miss them if I have to say goodbye), but in the meantime, I will assume that if I'm buying factory farm eggs (or eating eggs of unknown origin in a restaurant), that the factory's hatchery looks a lot like this one:
